What’s the best way to learn macrame? I’ve been teaching macrame weekly since 2016 in the UK and abroad.

I teach this craft in three different ways:

Free tutorials on my blog

One-off workshop

Online course

You might ask yourself.

What are the differences between the three?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

And which one is the best solution for me?

Here is a guide that will help you make the right decision on which is the best way to learn macramé for you.

Free tutorials on my blog

I have a few tutorials on my website, to either learn basic macramé knots or to attempt a small macrame project. Since they are free, I believe this is a good way to test if you like this craft, especially if you have never heard about macrame before.

ADVANTAGES:

-free

-if you just want to have a taste of what macrame is all about

-if you are good at following patterns on your own

DISADVANTAGES:

-if you are a maker already you might find it too easy

-if you have tried macrame before

-if you want to learn more than just one knot

-if you want to learn a more challenging craft

(discover the latest free pattern here)

One-off workshop

I run monthly macramé workshops mostly in London, but also in other parts of the UK. These are my most popular craft classes where you get to learn how to make a macrame wall hanging, a bag, a plant holder, a wreath etc. and take home your lovely handmade piece. Moreover, you will learn a few of the basic knots to be able to continue your macrame journey if you wish so in your own time. I have a few students that have opened their own Etsy shop selling their pieces after attending my workshops and discovering a passion for macrame.

ADVANTAGES:

-the workshops are between 1.5 to 3 hours long, this is enough time for you to get a good understanding of macrame

-the workshops are perfect if you want to make one-off piece for your home or a friend instead of buying it

-if you are creative and like crafting, this is a good way to get the basics of macrame before committing to it (aka spending money on rope supply)

DISADVANTAGES:

-you can get addicted to it and start wishing to learn more and more from me (eg. more knots, patterns, designs)

-you can’t attend my workshops because of location or work /family commitments

(discover workshops dates here)

Online course

I launch my online course “Macrame for Beginners- become a confident macrame artist” three times per year. I made this course, especially for people that want to learn macrame in depth and can’t attend my one-off workshops.

ADVANTAGES:

-if you want to dive deeply into the world of macrame and learn different knots, how to read patterns and how to design your own pieces

-if you want to work at your own pace in the comfort of your home

-if you are creative and like crafts, this is a good way to get the basics of macrame before committing to it (aka spends money on rope supply)

-if you prefer learning by watching a video rather than reading a pattern/pictures

-if you want to be part of a community of like-minded people from around the world

-if you need access to the teacher (that’s me) daily for the duration of the course (4 weeks)

DISADVANTAGES:

-you will need a commitment of 2/3 hours per week working on your macramé
