Micro-moments can transform even the busiest days into opportunities for creativity. Life moves fast—between work, family, and daily responsibilities, carving out time for creative expression can feel impossible. But the truth is, you don’t need to long, uninterrupted hours to nurture your creativity. Sometimes, all it takes is a few intentional minutes to spark inspiration and fuel your imagination.

In Mindful Macramé, I explore how micro-moments can seamlessly integrate creativity into your daily routine—just like tying knots in a beautiful macramé design.

My book breaks down simple macramé projects into three categories:

  • Creative Moments (up to 30 minutes)
  • Boost of Creativity (up to 60 minutes)
  • Creative Journey (over 60 minutes)

The Creative Moments section is perfect for introducing micro-moments of creativity into your routine, making it easy to embrace mindfulness and artistic expression, no matter how busy life gets.

What Are Micro-Moments?

Micro-moments are tiny slices of time of intentional activity or mindfulness that we carve into our daily routine.

Moments that often slip by unnoticed: waiting for your tea to brew, commuting to work, waiting for your kids at pickup, or even that quiet pause before a Zoom meeting starts.

While they might seem trivial, these moments are little pockets of potential. With a bit of mindfulness, you can turn them into opportunities to recharge your creative energy, reduce stress, boost productivity, focus, and positive thinking.

What I love about these micro-moments is that they are flexible and easy to introduce into our busy daily schedule.

Why Micro-Moments Matter

Creativity doesn’t need grand gestures or big plans. Sometimes, the smallest actions can make the biggest impact. Here’s why these micro-moments are game-changers:

  1. No Pressure, Just Play: When you only have a couple of minutes, there’s no pressure to create something perfect. You’re free to experiment and have fun.
  2. Fits Any Schedule: Whether you’re juggling work deadlines, kids, or both, micro-moments fit into even the busiest of days.
  3. Keeps You Inspired: A little creativity here and there keeps your mind energized, motivated, and ready for bigger projects.

How to Infuse Creativity Into Your Micro-Moments

Let’s talk about how to make the most of those fleeting minutes. Whether you’re into macramé, painting, or writing, my top tip is:

Always have something creative within reach. For me, it’s strings, measuring tape, scissors, and a small project I can pick up and work on for a few minutes. Mindful Macrame is a great companion if you need guidance and prefer to follow a step-by-step tutorial.

I have a special bag where I keep tools and a small project when I am on the go, commuting on the train, travelling on the plane, and meeting a friend for coffee.

Struggling to Make Micro-Moments a Habit?

  • Set Reminders: Stick notes in your bag to remind you to grab your toolkit, or set phone alerts to take a creative pause. You could even leave a note by the kettle as a gentle nudge.
  • Keep It Simple: Don’t overcomplicate things. Creativity doesn’t have to be a big production. In my book Mindful Macramé, you’ll find simple projects like car diffusers, keyrings, or trivets—perfect for micro-moments of creativity.
  • Celebrate Tiny Wins: Finished a quick project? Celebrate it! Every little bit of creativity adds up and keeps you motivated.

Other Types of Micro-Moments for Self-Care

Sometimes, micro-moments aren’t just about creativity—they’re about caring for yourself too. Here are some simple ideas:

  • Breathing: In Mindful Macramé, I share easy breathing exercises that take just 1–5 minutes. These can calm your nervous system, reduce stress, and help you feel grounded.
  • Movement: A few simple stretches, a gentle walk, or a quick sun salutation yoga routine can boost your mood, improve circulation, and invigorate your body.
  • Hydration: Drink a glass of water with intention. Notice the sensation of the water moving down your throat and refreshing your body.
  • Nature: Looking at nature can reduce stress and spark creativity. Surround yourself with plants, enjoy a view outside, or take a walk. If you have a pet, spending time with them can also help you connect with nature.
  • Gratitude: In Mindful Macramé, I share journaling prompts to help you reflect. Try writing down three things you’re grateful for each morning or evening. Gratitude can shift your mindset to a more positive place.
  • Lighting a Candle: A simple act, but a powerful one. Light a candle with intention—whether it’s for knotting for 10 minutes or focusing on journaling. When you blow it out, express gratitude for the moment to reinforce how important these micro-moments are for you.

Creativity and mindfulness don’t need grand gestures. They thrive in the little moments that we often overlook. By noticing these micro-moments and making the most of them, you can bring more inspiration, relaxation, and joy into your day. Whether you’re designing macramé pieces, journaling, or simply daydreaming, those micro-moments can be the spark that lights your creative fire.

So next time you’re waiting for your coffee to brew, grab your cord, notebook, or whatever inspires you, and see where those few minutes take you.

Trust me—the magic of micro-moments is real, and it’s waiting for you to weave it into your day.
