In the world of creative expression and crafting, certain art forms experience a resurgence, capturing the hearts and hands of enthusiasts seeking tactile and visually appealing hobbies. Among these timeless crafts, macramé has emerged as the reigning star of 2024. Its blend of versatility, simplicity, and artistic potential has elevated it to the coveted title of “Craft of the Year.”

I have been doing macrame since 2016 and I have seen the trend growing and evolving over the past 8 years around the world.

I was one of the first macrame artists teaching this craft in the UK, now there are macrame workshops all over the country and it’s beautiful to see how everyone can access and learn macrame.

Originating centuries ago, macramé gained popularity in the 1970s before slowly fading into the background of crafting trends. However, as creativity knows no bounds, this art form has made an astounding comeback, captivating modern crafters worldwide. Its appeal lies in the elegant knots and patterns created by using basic knotting techniques, offering endless possibilities for expression.

You can do more than just the classic plant holders with macrame!

You can make anything in macrame, once you learn the basic knots. From small or large wall hangings to jewellery, homeware, wedding backdrops & props to fashion statements and bags.

1. Therapeutic and Relaxing

The rhythmic process of tying knots in macramé is inherently therapeutic. The repetitive motions allow practitioners to unwind, destress, and find solace in the creative journey. It’s a meditative art, offering a much-needed escape from the chaos of everyday life.

2. Accessibility and Simplicity

Unlike some crafts that demand intricate skills or expensive tools, macramé requires minimal supplies—just cord, hands, and a dash of creativity. Its simplicity makes it accessible to beginners while offering room for mastery and innovation for seasoned artisans.

3. Versatile and Customizable

From wall hangings and plant hangers to intricate jewellery and clothing accents, macramé seamlessly integrates into various facets of life. Its adaptability allows crafters to personalize every creation, infusing their unique style into each piece.
